The industrial era is giving way to the digital one.
The internet is one of the most important technologies to have ever been created by man. It has the power and potential to transform our world into a bastion of life, liberty and progress surpassing the ambitions of our most progressive humanists. The internet however, is in danger of becoming a global platform for oppression, manipulation and tyranny. But only if we let that happen.
While the internet brings new threats to human rights it also presents new ways to protect them.
With the rise and proliferation of digital societies our human rights are exposed to new and complex threats. The rights to free speech, assembly, privacy and property, for example have new meaning and implications in the digital era. As more and more of ourselves and our daily lives move online these rights are exposed to significant abuse. Our mission is to reverse this and make the internet a bastion and citadel of human rights.
Ethical, legal, economic and technological codes working together are required for success
Four codes provide the pillars required to protect human rights in the digital era. They are ethical, legal, economic and technological in nature. The Internet.Foundation leads efforts to codify what is needed in each.
Setting the standard for 21st century citizenship
In the physical world, we have human rights to protect our natural rights as people. We must now extend these protections to the digital realm as natural extensions of our rights in cyberspace. The Internet.Foundation has led the call for universal digital rIghts since 2013 and works with government and non government authorities around the world to protect these rights with technology and international law. Our campaign for a Universal Declaration of Digital Rights is our primary mandate and the north star of all our initiatives.
Self-governance policy built upon trust and fairness
If data is the oil of the 21st century then we are creating a “Clean Data” ecosystem analogous to clean energy.
Clean Data is the minimum data required to complete a task, which has been consented by the data’s owner for use in completing that task. TheInternet.Foundation leads the call for the use of clean data in commerce and has established a Clean Data Charter, a self-regulating governance model om how personal and identity data can be used in commerce in a responsible, equitable and sustainable manner.
An international standard for the fair use of proprietary data in commerce.
The IF worked with the British Standards Institute (BSI) to inaugurate an Ethical Data Standard as an international standard for the responsible and sustainable use of data in commerce that can be audited. The Standard is based on The Internet.Foundations’ Clean Data Charter and has been published as a sub section of the BSI’s BS 10102 Big Data Standard for Data Driven Organizations.
A universal cross-chain framework for proprietary, personal and identity data trading
The mPod Protocol is an open source framework to enforce the ethical use of citizen data as defined by the Ethical Data Standard throughout the data value chain. mPods (Minimum Private Obscure Datastores) are a new type of information asset that contain data in cryptographic pods based on principles of minimum disclosure. They enable data to be isolated, containerized and priced for processing across multiple systems in an immutably auditable, safe and value generating manner for their owners. mPods and their underlying architecture deliver not only an ethically superior model to the status quo but also a much more secure, efficient, compliant and socially sustainable model for the evolution of the internet. With mPods not only can money be sent as easily as information but information can be sent as securely as money.
